The Sanctuary Course
An online learning opportunity for small groups.
Monday evenings, 7:00-8:30
For 8 weeks, beginning May 11
The Sanctuary Course is for anyone who wants to learn about faith and mental health.
It requires no previous training or expertise—just a willingness to engage in dialogue with other believers.
It’s for . . .
People with questions about mental health…
Mental health professionals with a wealth of knowledge to share…
Leaders who want to engage their community in mental health conversations…
People supporting loved ones with mental health problems…
People living with mental health problems…
How does it work?
We’ll be meeting entirely online, using Zoom. Only registered participants will be able to access our online meetings.
The Sanctuary Course is an eight-week study guide for small groups. Each week participants will do some background reading, gather together online, watch a short video, and join in conversation, reflection, and prayer.
Each participant will be emailed the course materials and information for joining our Zoom meetings.
What will we learn about?
We’ll explore topics such as:
- Understanding mental health and illness
- Challenging stigma
- The recovery journey
- The role of community in mental health recovery
Each topic is explored from a psychological, social, and theological perspective. Additionally, each session is accompanied by a compelling film featuring the story of an individual who has journeyed through mental health challenges as a person of faith.
Is this Counselling?
No, this is not counselling. The purpose of The Sanctuary Course is to raise awareness and start conversations in local churches regarding mental health. It is for educational purposes only and the information provided is not a substitute for medical or therapeutic advice. If you feel you may need medical advice, please consult a qualified health care professional.
Who is Leading?
Our sessions will be led by Pastor Corey Parish (Central Pentecostal Church), Esther Allison (Registered Psychotherapist with an M.A. in Spiritual Care & Psychotherapy), and Rev. Greg Smith-Young (Elora & Bethany United Churches)
Do I need to belong to a church or be a Christian to attend?
No. The Sanctuary Course is written from a Christian perspective. When we meet we’ll be using the Bible and praying. Nonetheless, the course is open for anyone to participate. You are welcome.
Is there a cost?
No. Thanks to the generosity of Sanctuary Health Ministries, we’re are able to offer this course for free during these challenging times. We will be asking participants to consider making a donation to Sanctuary Health Ministries. This is entirely optional.
